So.
There are nodes on my vocal cords. Luckily, not anything that requires surgery anytime soon, but still… Nodes. What a gross sounding word.
Treatment-wise, I am currently using a personal humidifier to keep things nice and moist in there, and I have been careful not to strain my voice unnecessarily. I’ve been singing only when I have to (and I am so proud to report that my students...

Something's happening.
Maybe it’s an impending ice storm, or tomorrow’s Michigan primary election, or the leap day coming up, but there’s got to be a reason why my music students were OUT OF THEIR MINDS today.
Were there teaching moments today? Definitely. Were they few and far between? Perhaps. Not all classes missed the points today: My fourth graders killed it on recorder testing today… My...

Whew.
Got an email today saying my masters diploma was finally mailed to my house. I was beginning to worry that maybe I didn’t really graduate.

SNOW DAY!
Looks like my nonchalance actually worked in my favor this time. I didn’t think of any snow day possibilities, and BOOM. We get one.
So here are the truths that go along with this event:
- I didn’t bring any of my teacher edition books home so that I could write plans this weekend. Because you know, the moment you plan to do that, the Snow Day Gods sense anticipation on your part...

Four truths for today...
… I threw away a ruined pot (something burned into the bottom of it a few nights ago during dinner-making) simply because I didn’t want to put in the work to clean it properly.
… I fill my personal steam humidifier using the small cup setting on my Keurig. This also means that sometimes, coffee grounds get in the water, and the steam smells AWESOME.
… I am grateful...

Holiday weekend
We are three days into this delicious mid-winter break… And how has it gone?
First off, a trip to the doctor revealed what I was afraid of: Possible vocal cord damage, unless I can miraculously turn this thing around. Vocal rest, water, singing in a practical range? I guess that’s the stuff my teaching is made of now. Anything to escape surgery! I will be getting a personal humidifier...

Ten times today...
… I played the Whitney Houston version of the national anthem for the students.
… I told them about what I remember from this day in 1991 (and about how AWKWARD I was as a middle school student!).
… I told them about the political climate, and how patriotic we were as a country at that time.
… I told the kids what a “rampart” was.
… I had to bite my...

SNL musical guests?
I’m thinking of asking my students this question (or the elementary-school-version of it, since none of them are old enough to watch Saturday Night Live!)….
If you were hosting SNL, who would you want your musical guest(s) to be?
I am SURE a lot of my kiddos will answer Justin Bieber, because that’s how they (apparently) roll. I’m also sure I’ll see a few...

My favorite anthem
Every year, in September, I introduce the year-long unit on the Star Spangled Banner. My brother’s an accomplished singer in Las Vegas, and performs it for some of the local professional sports teams out there. I like his versions; he never messes around, and performs it perfectly every time.
When I do my unit, I do play my brother’s versions for my students, but I always make sure...

You know what?
For no other reason than the fact that I woke up today, I’m going to have a bowl of ramen and a piece of cake for breakfast.

Wooooooo! I have just done canons with my third graders! Perfect tie-in! Thanks for this… Definitely reblogging.

I am DEFINITELY going to use this.

Truth(s).
My house is TRASHED right now. Meh, that’s what happens when two full-time teachers, a Boston terrier, and two kids under six live in the same house.
I am tired of not having a consistent singing voice. It’s almost been a month of this nonsense (losing my singing voice by Friday). ENT soon, methinks.
I haven’t had a decent cupcake in over two weeks. I think this will need to...
